چکیده

A 9-year-old boy diagnosed as Propionic acidemia at 2 months of age, complained of palpitations and nearsyncope episodes related with exercise. His metabolic condition was well controlled on sodium benzoate, carnitine, protein-free diet and biotin treatment. A prolonged QTc interval was noted on ECG-Holter (Fig. 1). Echocardiography showed no anomalies. He fulfilled criteria for diagnosis of Long QTc Syndrome (LQTS) [1], and treatment with propranolol was initiated with an observed decrease of the QTc interval to normal values. Acquired causes of LQTS were discarded, and genetic test was negative. At present he remains asymptomatic without cardiac events, and is under periodic follow-up.

[Propionic acidemia and long QT syndrome: A potentially serious combination].

Propionic acidaemia (OMIM 606054) is an autosomal recessive organic acid metabolism disorder that involves a defective form of propionyl-CoA carboxylase (PCC). The disease usually manifests with acute and potentially fatal episodes of metabolic decompensation and delays in cognitive development. Its association with cardiomyopathy, usually dilated, is well known, and usually manifests during th...

Possible mechanisms for sensorineural hearing loss and deafness in patients with propionic acidemia

Propionic acidemia is an inborn error of metabolism caused by deficiency of the mitochondrial enzyme propionyl-CoA carboxylase. Sensorineural deafness and severe hearing loss have been described as long-term complications of this disease, however, the mechanism has not yet been elucidated. We have recently shown by patch clamping experiments and Western blots that acute and chronic effects of a...

CT and MR of the brain in disorders of the propionate and methylmalonate metabolism.

PURPOSE To present the CT and MR findings in children with propionic and methylmalonic acidemia. METHODS Twenty-three new patients with methylmalonic and 20 with propionic acidemia were examined with CT and/or MR of the brain. In total 52 CT and 55 MR studies were done. Twenty-six previously published cases were also reviewed. RESULTS The findings were similar in the two syndromes. During t...

Successful Treatment of Cardiac Failure Due to Cardiomyopathy in Propionic Acidemia by Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy and Hemodialysis in a Young Adult

Propionic acidemia is an autosomal recessive disorder that is due to deficiency in the enzyme propionyl-CoA carboxylase. Cardiomyopathy is a well-known phenomenon in propionic acidemia that it may rapidly progress to death. Here we describe a case of propionic acidemia in a 27-yearold man who developed adult-onset secondary dilated cardiomyopathy. In early infancy he was diagnosed with propioni...

Neurologic nonmetabolic presentation of propionic acidemia.

BACKGROUND Patients with propionic acidemia usually present in the neonatal period with life-threatening ketoacidosis, often complicated by hyperammonemia. It was thought that the neurologic abnormalities seen in this disease were exclusively the consequences of these acute crises. Experience with 2 patients with propionic acidemia indicates that this disease may present first with prominent ne...
